Q. I see there are two types of wordpress: one having to download this program and do some serious programming plus self-hosting, and the other being much like a site-service blog. I am wondering what exactly this self-hosting means. Getting the domain means to buy the service, which means you have to pay monthly to keep your domain? and is it the only way to start programming your own wordpress? Also, I am not so sure what exactly the differences are between. I know the site service one is limited in terms of gadgets and all, but how much different and useful is the programming one? or am I getting this whole concept wrong?

You can install the Google XML Sitemap Generator plugin and it will notify Google, Yahoo and Bing when you do updates to your blog. I originally went with blogger but realised I wanted the flexibility to host my own videos, pictures and all sorts for all to see and I wanted to do it in my own way, so i ended up going with my own domain - hence i bought www.monkey-boy.co.uk from one.com. If your just a "standard user" and dont want to do much more than an online diary, I see no point in paying for hosting. If you are a "power user" who is interested in designing your own graphical site etc go for your own hosting. one.com has some pretty cheap deals going right now too so its a good time to buy (and no, I don't work for them :P ) Beebs

Is making a self-hosted wiki free, or does it cost money?

I was looking into making a community editable portion of my website, and remembered seeing some wikis on other sites, but all I can find is something that costs money, or is free, but not able to be self-hosted. I don't want to have it on their domain, I want it on mine. Is there something else that will work, instead of a wiki if a wiki costs money? I'm open to anything.
