Noun

sequence (plural sequences)

  1. A set of things next to each other in a set order; a series
  2. A series of musical phrases where a theme or melody is repeated, with some change each time, such as in pitch or length (example: opening of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony).
  3. A musical composition used in some Catholic Masses between the readings. The most famous sequence is the Dies Irae (Day of Wrath) formerly used in funeral services.
  4. (mathematics) An ordered list of objects.
  5. (now rare) A subsequent event; a consequence or result.

In mathematics, a sequence is an ordered list of objects (or events). Like a set, it contains members (also called elements or terms), and the number of terms (possibly infinite) is called the length of the sequence. Unlike a set, order matters, and the exact same elements can appear multiple times at different positions in the sequence. A sequence is a discrete function.

For example, (C, R, Y) is a sequence of letters that differs from (Y, C, R), as the ordering matters. Sequences can be finite, as in this example, or infinite, such as the sequence of all even positive integers (2, 4, 6,...). Finite sequences are sometimes known as strings or words, and infinite sequences as streams. The empty sequence ( ) is included in most notions of sequence, but may be excluded depending on the context.

An infinite sequence of real numbers (in blue). This sequence is neither increasing, nor decreasing, nor convergent, nor Cauchy. It is bounded, however.

How do you use DNase footprinting to identify a promoter sequence?
Q. How do I use this to identify a promoter sequence? I realise that you can identify protein binding sequences, but how do I go about using this to identify a promoter sequence?
Asked by Daksa - Wed Aug 26 21:30:44 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The idea is that promoter sequences have lots of transcription factors bound to them ( at least when they are active), so when you cleave your DNA with a DNase, the promoter portion comes out intact because it is shielded by all those transcription factors sitting on it.

What amino acids are made by this nucleotide sequence?
Q. This should be an easy question for most of you. Say you have the nucleotide sequence on a piece of mRNA: uug ccu agu what amino acid sequence in the protein is produced by this mRNA? My confusion is over whether or not I should make UUG into AAC for example, and call this Aspargine. Do I reverse the codons, or is the amino acid sequence made simply what's given to me above?

A. If that's the 5'-to-3' sequence of the mRNA (which is usually how it's written), the anticodon in the tRNA (3'-to-5') would be: AAC - GGA - UCA And the amino acid sequence would be: Leucine-Proline-Serine Just as a general explanation, DNA is double stranded. In genes, there's the coding strand and the template strand. The coding strand is usually the one that's given when you look up a sequence of a gene, but it's the template strand (the coding strand's reverse complement) that's used as a template to make the mRNA (such that the mRNA is has the same 5' to 3' sequence as the coding strand of DNA). Translation goes from 5' to 3' on the mRNA starting at the START codon (AUG) and proceeding 5' to 3' down the mRNA until a STOP codon is… [cont.]

What is the correct sequence of steps for removing galvanized sprinkler pipes?
Q. I'm redoing my front lawn - have removed the shrubs and killed the lawn. I will be replacing the 50-year old glavanized pipe sprinkler system. I've decided to do some of the demolition myself. What is the sequence of steps I should follow in digging out and removing the old pipes? The shut-off valve at the house is for the water main, not the sprinklers.

A. How deep are the pipes? It would be allot easier to leave them. If you really want to dig them up, start at the house and follow the pipes as you dig. If you are installing a new system and can use any of the trenches for it, do so. Cut the pipe into lengths that you will be able to get rid of. I recommend using a sawzall, but a hacksaw will work.

Joss Whedon's Firefly was awesome, but its title . sequence. really didn't sell the show. What Firefly really needed was a kick-ass, old-school, synth-happy, guitar-solo, Yay Spaceships, 1980s-style intro credit . sequence. . And here it is.
