Is there a kit available to replace the vacuum operated 4 wheel drive actuator on a 1995 Dodge Ram 1500?
Q. I'm going to be getting the 4 wheel drive fixed next week..and I have heard the factory actuator is rather unreliable in the cold, or when sumerged in water...I live in Michigan, winter is coming, and I drive through some pretty deep holes at times. I've owned the truck for a little over a year, and the 4 wheel drive has never worked...so...gimme some options folks!

A. those don't give that many problems that you would have to change them out that often,i got a 99 and a 2001 model that still have the original ones on them and i have had no problems from them at all they,ll last ten to fifteen years easy,so i wouldn't go to a lot of trouble to change something that works good now, good luck.

Would fixing 4 wheel drive on 2000 Chevy Blazer help in snow?
Q. I know it would, but I have an old Chevy Blazer that flat out cannot be driven in the snow because its rear wheel drive and fish tails everywhere when I drive in the snow. My 4 wheel drive doesn't work and I know its very expensive to fix. Would adding wait to the back (sandbags) work or is there any other options?? Thank you for your input. I live in Chicago so it snows here a lot!

A. Yes it will. However, I question the tires that are on your truck. Tires are more important than drivetrain or weight when it comes to getting grip in the snow. After all, that is what is gripping the snow. :) The 4WD on my 1998 Blazer does not work and I don't think it was working in winter last year either. I have a set of BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A KO on my truck that meet severe snow standards and the only time I really get stuck is when trying to go from a stop (only sometimes and I get going after 3-4 seconds) or when I'm trying to go from a stop on an icy patch (like my parking lot, which almost never gets any sunlight and is somewhat a downhill slope, so I gotta rock back and forth sometimes to get out). I can drive… [cont.]

Q. I have a 4 door 1997 Chevy Tahoe 4 wheel drive. The 4 wheel drive is electric push button, with 2Hi 4HI/LOW settings. Nothing happens when the buttons are pushed. The 4wheel drive has never worked as long as i have had the truck. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on fixing it, and where to start, electrical problem or more? Thanks!!

A. start with fuse block and check fuse first then check to see if power is getting to the shift button then move under the vehicle and check the shift solenoid and last check the solenoid it self.

How much does it cost to get a wheel bearing fixed? More info inside...?
Q. I have a 2002 Nissan Maxima Se. Front wheel drive. 109,000 miles. Its def the front of the car, cause when I turn left it makes this click click click noise. Just wondering with maintenance and such, can someone give me an estimate on how much itll cost to get fixed?
Asked by charliec2003 - Tue Aug 4 16:55:04 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I doubt seriously that you have a wheel hub issue. Clicking noises while turning is usually the ball bearings inside of an outer a CV-joint. Wheel bearings roar like a freight train when driving straight on a smooth road. Both are easy to test to find out which it is. To test a wheel bearing lift the frame on jack-stands and remove the brake calipers. With the car in neutral spin the individual wheel hubs froward and backward. You should hear and feel with your hands unusual lumps in the hub as you turn it. To test CV-joints grasp each joint one at a time and push toward the front and rear bumper. If they appear to be loose or you see a torn boot you've found your problem. Replacement of an entire re-manufactured "half-shaft" is less… [cont.]

My four wheel drive went out. How much will it cost to fix?
Q. Went to trade in our 2004GMC Envoy yesterday & everything went great except when they realized the 4 wheel drive was not working they said they would take $3000 off our trade in value [which if that happened our great deal wouldn't work] if it was not fixed. Just wondering how much it could cost? It's been out for about 2 years now. Never fixed it because we have lived in the south and have never needed it. Not a big deal to us.

A. Shouldn't be $3000 dollars, that's for sure.

I took the 4 wheel drive fuse out and it runs so much better for some reason. before i replace the actuator i wanted to know what i does. what parts should i check or replace to fix my 4 wheel drive. Im going to replace the selector switch and if i have to the transfer case motor. is there something im overlooking. thank you

A. Hard to say for sure, and I'm not that familiar with Blazer, but on Jeeps they used to have a vacuum hose connected to the front axle, near the middle, that used to get knocked off all the time. Worth a shot to check before you go buying expensive parts you might not need.

A. No you do not have to change the front axle!! Not sure where that came from, but yes, you do have to change the complete transfer case and the NP 242 is a very good choice. You will have to measure, you may have to adjust drive shaft lengths, but now a big deal. Good Luck

Need advice on diagnosing 4 wheel drive problem on 1996 suburban?
Q. I have a 1996 suburban that I am fixing up to sell, the 2 wheel and 4 wheel drive buttons are not lighting up on the dash and it is not shifting in and out of four wheel drive either. Can any help on what to look for first in this situation?
Asked by cb247smooth - Sun Oct 26 17:46:58 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. With no lights or functionalty, this is no-doubt electrical. As mentioned above, check the fuses (don't forget the ones in the engine compartment). If they are all good, you will need someone that knows how to diagnose elctrical issues, and has a good stockpile of schematics, to look at the vehicle.

Has anyone else seen women drive on the road with NO hands on the wheel to fix their hair?
Q. Today, I saw a woman that I am guessing was in her middle 20's driving in the left lane of a 40 mph speed limit two lane road going 50mph with BOTH hands off the wheel while she was doing her hair. In astonishment I passed her and I looked in my rear view mirror and she was on a cellphone. I am not sure if she was on the cellphone while she had both hands tending to her hair but I certainly would not rule that out. Has anybody seen women do this before, driving on a straight-away with both hands fixing their hair and only adjusting the steering wheel every so often when she started to drift off the road instead of just waiting for a red light? Thank You for the answers. People are saying that some people can drive with their knees… [cont.]

A. Yes, I have...unfortunately it was the last conscious act she ever committed on this Earth. Earlier this year, a woman driving Northbound on the Henry Hudson Parkway just south of the NYC Line (near the Saw Mill River Parkway) was doing just this. She took her hands off the wheel (so she could put on her eyeliner), as she did so, the roadway veered to the left, she kept going to the right. At this point she drove completely off the roadway and into a tree. She expired at the hospital. The official explanation of death on the accident report was labeled as the generic "driver inattention" - which really doesn't do any justice to the carelessness of her action.

I have a chevy 1990 four wheel drive truck and the four wheel drive is not working how do I fix it?
Q. i have change the actuator on your front differential but the 4x4 will still not work and the floor shifter light is not on after changeing the actuator on your front differential
Asked by andis652004 c - Sat Oct 24 14:49:19 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. depends on what its doing. if im right you have the floor shift transfer case. that being the case if the lights on the floor shifter say its in 4wd but it is not locked in then the actuator on your front differential is bad. without any details to what its doing thats the best i can do. the actuator im talkin about is pretty bad about going out and its a pretty easy fix. it is located on the passenger side of the front differential on the backside towards the transmission. it has a couple wires running to it so just look for the wires running toward your diff. your gonna need a big cresent wrench to change it and thats it. the new part should be 60 or 70 dollars.

Can you help me find 03 Dodge Ram 4 wheel drive problem before winter?
Q. I have 03 Dodge Ram 1500 and when the 4 wheel drive is engaged and then while continuing driving, the 4 wheel drive will be shifted out of , then the truck's engine will slow way down until I have to pull off the road and shut engine off for a few minutes. When I restart I can drive at the correct speed, what is causing this problem and how can I fix it?
Asked by didtonoel1 - Fri Sep 11 17:22:04 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. it sounds like a problem with the transfer case, you need to find out which transfer case you have and wether or not it has sensors in it. more than likely you have a sensor problem that's not showing up as a problem code.

does anybody know how to fix a ford ranger 4x4 that wont go into four wheel drive?
Q. i own a 2002 ford ranger 4x4 and it wont engage when i turn the switch. both of the fuses appear to be ok, but it won't go into four high or four low.
Asked by kevin m - Tue Jan 15 03:55:22 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. when you try to engage the 4whl does the 4x4 indicator flash, this indicates a problem with the system, if no lites flash then have someone try to engage the 4x4 system while you smack the motor on the transfer case with a small hammer, this motor is subject to the elements and lack of use cause it to not work a smack with a hammer will sometimes jar it loose, if the 4x4 engages now the best thing you can do for it is use it more, driving straight down a dry road engage the 4x4, it wont hurt it any and of course disengage it before you turn, thats the biggest problem with these systems is a lack of use

Asked by Cody H - Tue Aug 12 11:56:21 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Sounds like it is actually in 4 Low. Try cycling the transfer case through all ranges while the engine is idling and the transmission is in neutral (not Park) If the transfer case is actually in 2 High the rear wheels will spin under sudden heavy acceleration on a gravel or dirt surface. If it is in 4 High the wheels will not spin, In 4 Low all 4 wheels may spin and the transmission will shift rapidly through the gears and the engine will be racing noticeably at speeds above 40 MPH - Caution! exceeding 50 MPH in 4 Low may result in engine over speed and damage! If memory serves correctly the hubs on that vehicle will disengage when the vehicle is backed up about 20 feet when the transfer case is in 2 High. The only absolute confirmation… [cont.]

A. You will have to replace the transmission with a 2 wheel drive model, and a new drive shaft and possibly another crossmember. It would be cheaper to sell the truck as is and get a 2 wheel drive model.
